Contact Lenses Exams

When you make an appointment with our team at SPEX in Seattle, we want to know if you are interested in wearing contact lenses. Many people are not aware of the fact that the tests required to fit contacts are not included in a routine eye exam. We always want to make sure you get everything you need during your visit, so we will inquire about your vision needs when you contact us.

Your Contact Lens Exam

Every eye exam at SPEX is designed to determine the health of your eyes and your need for vision correction. Routine eye exams are important to get at least once a year so that we can detect the signs of eye disease early – when it is easiest and most effective to treat such diseases. Once we have made sure your eyes are healthy, we can conduct additional tests to help you get a pair of eyeglasses or contacts.

Your contact lens exam will look for several different things:

Measuring Eye Surface

Eyes may look pretty similar to the average person, but there can be considerable variations that are important to factor when fitting a contact lens. The lens will be sitting directly on the surface of your eye, so you want it to fit as perfectly as possible so that it is comfortable and safe to wear.

Vision Prescription

We want you to see as clearly as you can, which means making sure you get the right prescription. The measurements for your contact lens prescription are actually quite different from your eye glasses prescription, which is understandable when you consider the difference in the two. Eye glasses sit around 12mm from the surface of your eyes, while contact lenses sit directly on the eye.

Lifestyle Needs

You may sit at a computer all day, or you may work in construction. You may be really into sports, or you may prefer to sit home and read. While we want your contact lenses to work for anything you do, we also want to consider your lifestyle to make sure that you get the best pair for your needs. There are a lot of different options out there, some of which will work better for you than others.

Learning to Wear Contacts

You can learn to wear contacts quickly and without too much hassle, but there are key things you need to remember to protect the health of your eyes and get the best experience. As part of your appointment, we will instruct you on how to put in and take out your lenses, how to store them, how to clean them (if cleaning is necessary) and any other tips you need to know.
